Hiring for Full-time Community Organizer!
Please see the attached job description!
This position is open until filled. To apply, send cover letter and resume to cando@thecentralneighborhood.com
Meet Arla! Most recent recipient of CANDO's Housing Grant and Loan Program
CANDO Housing Funding Meets the Needs of Our Community
By Sam, CANDO Housing Organizer
In January of 2019, longtime Central resident Arla Landon contacted the CANDO office to ask about resources to fix a leak in her bathroom. Arla had been active with the neighborhood organization when it was called Central Neighborhood Improvement Association (CNIA) before CANDO formed. She remembered that there might be funding available for emergency repairs such as hers.
Her timing was great! In 2018, CANDO finalized a contract with Center for Energy and Environment (CEE) to administer loans and grants to homeowners, including potential homeowners. We understand the need of community members to have safe, secure affordable housing in the midst of a housing shortage and we endeavor to help renters and homeowners remain in their homes. Upon reviewing our first applications for loans and grants, we discovered we needed to adjust our guidelines to lower barriers so more people may access the funding. Anyone who wants may fill out an application with CEE for a property in Central Neighborhood (more details below).
I visited Arla to bring her the paper application for the emergency grant and during the visit, I learned about Arla’s family history in the neighborhood, we talked about elder housing possibilities at Sabathani, and I learned that we were both former Hennepin County AFSCME (American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees) union members! I was able to offer some assistance in filling out CANDO & CEE housing programs paperwork and then submit it to the lending processing department at CEE.
CEE quickly followed up with Arla to let her know that they would be processing her application. Arla began contacting contractors for repair bids. Only a few days later, I received another call from Arla after one of the contractors alerted her about a concern with her furnace. We kept in contact about it, and then, during the coldest week of winter, the situation with the furnace went from bad to worse and it completely went out.
CANDO kicked into overdrive! After contacting several other community resources, we reviewed the programs Arla was eligible for with her CEE application. Due to the high cost to replace her old gravity or “octopus” furnace, Arla needed to apply for both the emergency grant and a repair loan.
In the meantime, other friends from Arla’s faith community and neighborhood pitched in to get a temporary solution to get Arla heat in her home during the polar vortex. CANDO & CEE staff worked to expedite the application process and, after more than two weeks without a functioning furnace, Arla was able to get her repairs done. She now has a loan to pay for the majority of the furnace replacement, but didn’t need to go to a bank for financing.
Arla told us, “I couldn't have done it without you guys. I’m blessed with all the help I received from my community and CANDO!”
If you would like more information about the CEE CANDO housing programs or want to apply, go to this link: mncee.org/services/financing/residential. You can also contact 612.335.5884 or loaninfo@mncee.org.

New staff, new opportunities! Meet Victoria and Sam!
CANDO Staff photo by Fernando Nuñez
We asked our two new staff people a few questions to help introduce them to the neighborhood...
Sam
What is your role at CANDO?
I’m the new Community Organizer. I’m working a lot right now with our Board Chair, Alex Griffin, on the Housing Task Force. We’re holding a Rent Affordability Forum on July 18th to hear from the community what direction we should take to help keep rent affordable in Central. And we’ll working on reviving previous programs and creating new programs for homeowners as well.
Why did you want to work at CANDO?
Most recently, I had an office job while also doing community organizing work in my spare time. I’ve done community organizing work for a long time, in the fight against police brutality, as a union organizer and a student organizer and I was drawn to CANDO’s work because it seemed innovative and really focused on community involvement.
What are you looking forward to?
I see us re-emerging as a more visible presence in the neighborhood. I think that part of hiring for these two new positions was the CANDO Board guiding us to hold more events and to connect more strongly with individuals in the neighborhood. With our new capacity we’ll be able to tackle real issues that people are facing that aren’t being addressed in other ways.
Victoria
What is your role at CANDO?
I’m CANDO’s Administrator. I take care of all of the “business” details from accounting, payroll and human resources to monitoring our contracts with the City of Minneapolis. The idea is that if that work is with one person, it will allow our organizing team to focus on outreach and engagement. So far I’ve been setting up a new payroll service and bank account, assisting with an audit, and taking over accounting from the contracted accountant.
Why did you want to work at CANDO?
First and foremost, I’ve been a Central resident for 17 years. I love and am deeply invested in my neighborhood. I’m also the Executive Director of the Chicago Avenue Fire Arts Center (CAFAC) which is a community-based arts organization just a few doors down from CANDO’s office. I’m one of the founding members of CAFAC and up until a couple of years ago, I volunteered my time with that organization while working full-time as the Continuing Education Program Director at MCTC. I'm excited to follow up that career by now wearing these two hats right in the neighborhood.
What are you looking forward to?
I’m looking forward to this new organizational structure that we’re setting up. Specifically, working on ways to be more responsive and build more connections and trust with our community members.
And for more information on what we've been working on, check out our June Staff Report!
Want to know what we've been working on? Check out our new monthly reports!
We're excited to start a new monthly blog feature: Staff reports! We have typically just shared these at our CANDO Board meetings, but now that we have increased staff capacity, we want to share these reports and bring more neighbors into the conversation.
See something you're interested in learning more about? Sending a message to info@thecentralneighborhood.com or call us at 612-824-1333 and we'll put you in touch with folks working on that issue or project.
We always need volunteers for things like neighbor outreach, language translation and interpretation, photography, video and storywriting!
